Thoreau Foreign Language Immersion Program (TIP)

Aside from Foreign Language Classes, Thoreau has a program that serves the Eisenhower International Language Immersion School, Zarrow International Elementary School and native French and Spanish speaking students. Mrs. Hatter and Mrs. Mari are native speakers of French and Spanish respectively. The classes they deliver to both French and Spanish Immersion Students provide a full language program emphasizing reading, writing and grammar.

Thoreau French Immersion Program

The three years French Immersion program consists of five stages surrounding the theme of Communication:

Realization: The students are encouraged to evaluate their personal knowledge of the French language and discover their individual potential.

Foundations: We work closely and diligently with the students to help them understand how important strong foundations are to the mastery of this exclusive skill of speaking and writing French accurately.

Once the students reach this level of understanding and if they are willing to continue perfecting their French skills, it becomes rather easy to guide them through the mystery of grammar and structure of the French language and awaken them to the existence of Systems and the importance of learning how and when the application of these systems is required.

The ultimate goal is to perfect the students' spoken and written expression and to give them the opportunity not only to earn one high school credit but to test out of French II and into a French III class.

Thoreau is proud of its French Exchange Program to Amiens, France which was established in 2003. Our partner and sister school is Collge Saint Jean-Baptiste De La Salle. In April Thoreau families host a group of La Sallian students for three weeks whereas in June Thoreau students spend three weeks with Amienese families. As a result, students, parents and teachers from across the Atlantic have forged close relationships and lifelong friendships.
